Make

Ingredients

  • kodo millet — 1 cup
  • onion — 1/4 cup (chopped)
  • green chillies — 2
  • carrot — 1 (chopped)
  • ginger — 1 tsp (grated)
  • mustard seeds — 1 tsp
  • black gram (urad) dal — 1/4 tsp
  • bengal gram (chana) dal — 1/4 tsp
  • curry leaves — 1 sprig
  • turmeric (a pinch; used in the method, no quantity given)
  • water — 4 cups
  • oil (as required)
  • salt (to taste)

Method

  1. Wash the kodo millet two or three times and drain it well.
  2. Heat oil in a pressure cooker and add the mustard seeds. When they splutter, add the urad dal, chana dal, curry leaves and green chillies.
  3. Once the dals turn golden, add the onion, ginger and turmeric and fry until the onion is golden.
  4. Add the carrot and stir for 2-3 minutes, then add the millet and stir for a minute so everything is coated.
  5. Pour in 4 cups of water with salt. When it boils, close the lid and cook on moderate heat for 5 whistles.
  6. Open after the pressure drops by itself and serve hot with chutney or sambar.
