Make

Ingredients

  • sorghum (jowar) flakes — 1/2 cup
  • moong dal — 1/2 cup
  • water (enough to cook the dal)
  • milk — 2 cups
  • jaggery — 1 cup
  • cardamom powder — 1 tbsp
  • ghee — 1 tbsp
  • cashew nuts — 4-6
  • dry coconut (as required, in small pieces)

Method

  1. Cook the moong dal in water until soft.
  2. Add the sorghum flakes and milk and cook until everything is very soft.
  3. Stir in the jaggery and cardamom powder until the jaggery has melted.
  4. Heat the ghee in a small pan, fry the cashews and coconut pieces and tip them over the pongal. Serve hot.

Tips

  • General practice: turn the heat right down before adding the jaggery; jaggery stirred into boiling milk can make it split.
